Frequently Asked Questions
Buying a boat is a big decision, and we know you’ll likely have a few questions along the way.
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive about Goodreau Boats, including construction, materials, customization options, and ordering. If you don’t see your question here, feel free to contact us. We’re always happy to help.
Do you build V-bottom boats?
No. We specialize in true flat-bottom boats only.
Our custom design includes a modified V bow (front entry) that helps cut through waves, but the hull itself is completely flat. That means:
-
No subfloor required — the bottom of the boat is the floor
-
More stability at rest
-
Shallow water capability
-
Easier maintenance and cleaning
If you’re looking for deep-V offshore performance, we’re not the right builder. If you want rugged, shallow-water stability — that’s what we do best.

Are these boats good for fishing?
Absolutely. The flat-bottom design provides excellent stability, which makes them ideal for anglers who are casting, moving around the boat, or fishing with multiple people onboard.
The modified V bow helps cut through light chop while the wide hull keeps the boat steady when you're standing, landing fish, or shifting weight around the boat.
Because the bottom of the boat also acts as the floor, there’s plenty of open space for gear, coolers, tackle, and additional upgrades like casting decks, swivel seats, or storage.
What material are your aluminum boats built from?
All aluminum models are built using 5052 marine-grade aluminum.
-
1/8” thick hull
-
1/4” transom (upgradeable to 1/2”)
-
Ribs stitch-welded every 6” on center
-
Full-length ribs
-
Welded inside and out
No rivets. No shortcuts. No thin mass-production material.
Are your boats fully welded?
Yes. Every aluminum and steel boat is fully welded.
All seams are welded on both sides* for maximum structural integrity. These boats are built to work not sit in a showroom.
Do the benches provide flotation?
Yes.
The benches are mandatory and double as sealed flotation chambers (air tanks). They’re part of the structure and part of the buoyancy system.
On the 17’ and 19’ models, the center “dummy seat” can be:
-
Removed
-
Converted into storage
-
Customized depending on your build
Do you build steel boats as well?
Yes.
Our steel models are the original Goodreau design — proven for over 70 years in Ontario conditions.
-
14-gauge floors and transoms
-
16-gauge sides and seats
-
Ribs every 8” on center
-
Superior impact resistance
-
Ideal for contractors, commercial work, waterfowl hunters, and early spring ice conditions
Steel is heavier and requires paint maintenance — but it’s unmatched for high-impact work environments.

Are Goodreau boats good for duck hunting?
Yes. Flat-bottom boats are one of the most popular hull styles for waterfowl hunting because they provide excellent stability in shallow water, marshes, and muddy back areas where deeper V-hull boats struggle.
Our boats are commonly used in marshes, flooded fields, and back lakes across Ontario. The wide flat hull makes it easier to move around the boat while setting decoys or handling gear, and the shallow draft allows access to areas many boats simply can’t reach.
Many hunters also add upgrades like subfloor, float pods, or custom layouts to better suit their hunting setup.
Do you offer custom upgrades?
Yes. Most Goodreau boats are built to order, which allows us to incorporate a variety of upgrades and customizations depending on how you plan to use the boat.
There are a few structural requirements. The rear bench, middle bench and bow bench must remain, as they are sealed flotation air tanks. On the 17’ and 19’ models, the middle “dummy seat” can be removed or converted into storage.
We can also add options like subfloors, storage compartments, seating upgrades, push bars, pull bars, and other custom fabrication depending on the application.
Over the years we’ve built boats for hunters, anglers, construction companies, and even custom setups like tank holders and plumbing for chemical tanks used to treat lagoons.
If you have a specific setup in mind, we’re always happy to discuss what’s possible.
If you can picture it, we can usually fabricate it.
Do you sell outboard motors?
Yes.
We partner with a local Honda dealer to supply Honda outboards with your build.
Motors are sold as part of a package. We don’t list motor pricing online — contact us for complete package pricing and financing options.
Do you offer financing?
Yes.
Financing is available on boat and motor packages. Contact us directly to discuss terms and approvals.
How long does it take to build a boat?
Production timelines vary by season.
Summer and fall builds fill quickly. We recommend securing your build slot early with a deposit.
If timing matters to you — don’t wait.
How much is the deposit?
We require 50% down to secure your build slot.
The remaining balance is due upon completion before pickup or delivery.
Are your boats Transport Canada compliant?
Yes.
All models include:
-
Proper flotation
-
Capacity plate
-
Horsepower rating
-
Occupant and weight limits
Built legally. Built properly.
How long are your boats actually?
Each boat measures approximately 5–6 inches longer than the listed model size due to fabrication style.
For example:
A 17’ model will measure slightly longer than 17’.
Do your boats handle rough water?
Goodreau boats are built for real-world Ontario conditions — back lakes, rivers, marshes, cottage country, and hunting camps. The modified V bow helps cut through chop while the flat bottom provides excellent stability.
Structurally, the boats are extremely strong. However, they are true flat-bottom hulls, which means in large open water like the Great Lakes during heavy weather, the ride can become rough due to wave slap.
They’ll remain stable and capable, but comfort will depend on the conditions and how the boat is operated.

Can I order just the hull?
Yes.
We offer bare hull options for customers who want to finish or customize themselves.
Do you ship or deliver?
Yes. Delivery can be arranged within Canada. Contact us for a quote.
Why choose Goodreau over a big-box brand?
Many mass-produced aluminum boats use thinner aluminum panels that are often riveted to wood structures or internal framing to keep manufacturing costs down.
Goodreau boats are built differently.
Our boats are built entirely from aluminum or steel — no wood components — which eliminates the risk of rot, water absorption, or structural weakening over time.
The bench seats are also sealed flotation air tanks, meaning we don’t rely on foam or other materials to create buoyancy. This keeps the structure clean, durable, and easy to maintain.
The result is a hull that is stronger, longer-lasting, and built entirely from welded metal, designed for real-world use rather than thin aluminum wrapped around internal materials.
These boats are built for people who actually use them.
